Descriptions:
S/T Perinatal Data Collections: VIC: Indigenous status is a measure of whether a person (baby) identifies as being of Aboriginal or TSI origin and is accepted as such by the community. A person of Aboriginal descent is a person descended from the original Australian Inhabitants. The Mother and Father must be asked about their descent to determine the descent of the baby. NSW: An Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander baby is a baby of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent as identified by the mother. The baby’s Indigenous status should be asked directly of the mother, regardless of the information separately recorded in the hospital database. QLD: An Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander is a person of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent who identifies as an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander and is accepted as such by the community in which she lives. Note that a baby’s indigenous status cannot be determined simply by observation and therefore this question must be asked of all mothers. SA (from 01/2012): As per NHDD. WA (electronic from 1/1/12): as per NHDD. WA RCA: Aboriginal or Non Aboriginal.
