Definitions:
S/T Perinatal Data Collections: NSW: A baby separated from its mother for the purposes of receiving observation, special treatment or intensive care. VIC: Whether the neonate was admitted into special care nursery (SCN) or neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). SA: If the baby required special nursery care, or was admitted to Neonatal Intensive Care. TAS: If the baby cared for in special care nursery, or intensive care unit because of a medical condition.
Descriptions:
QLD: Indicate if the baby was admitted to Intensive Care Nursery (ICN) or Special Care Nursery (SCN). Specify the type of nursery the baby was admitted to by entering the number of days the baby was admitted to ICN and/or SCN, including 0 if the baby was not admitted. Reporting in this field is only required for those facilities where approval is current. Also specify reason for admission. ACT PMC: Yes/No and length of stay.

Additional information

National data on admission to NICU/SCN is available (yes/no). QLD, SA, WA, TAS, and ACT collect the length of stay. These data are submitted to the NPDC but are not routinely published. QLD also provide a free text field for reason for admission. NSW and SA collect whether a birth defect was the main reason for admission. WA only collect this item where admission to a SCN/NICU at birth site.
