Definitions:
S/T Perinatal Data Collections:
NSW: Infant feeding on discharge from the birth hospital (breastfeeding). VIC: Whether the mother attempted to breastfeed the baby or express breast milk at least once. Also collect separately whether the last feed prior to discharge was taken directly from the breast with no complementary feeding of any kind.QLD: Includes breast milk/colostrum received directly from the breast as well as expressed breast milk/colostrum received by but not limited to syringe, cup or enteral tube. The values are: at any time from birth until discharge and during the 24 hours prior to discharge. TAS: Fully breastfeeding on discharge: The mother is fully breastfeeding the baby when discharged. Partially breastfeeding on discharge: The mother is feeding the baby through a combination of breast and bottle feeding when discharged or whether the mother is not breastfeeding on discharge. NT: Baby feeding status on discharge of mother: artificial formula only from birth to discharge; breastfeed only from birth to discharge; breastfeeding from start to discharge but had one or more artificial formulas; breastfeed initiated but discharged fully artificial formula; n/a (baby remains in special care nursery); n/a (stillborn, neonatal death or adoption).
Descriptions:
ACT: There is no definition available. The values collected are: Mother intends to BF - Yes/No; Baby ever breastfed/EBM - Yes/No; Baby still BF/EBM at discharge - Yes/No.

Additional information

There is variation in the type of information collected. QLD and ACT do not differentiate between expressed breast milk/colostrum and that received directly from the breast. VIC collect separately whether breastfeeding was initiated at all during the episode and whether the last feed prior to discharge was exclusively breastfed.
